About GO-FAR

GO-FAR is an advanced journalism programme for students working in any medium in Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information. This programme is designed to take students out of their comfort zones and stretch the skills that they have already developed.

This project will be fully funded by the WKWSCI, and the students will make two separate week-long trips led by Assistant Professor Shyam Tekwani to Karnataka, India, in July and September.

This online portal will serve as a record of the team’s adventures, and it will be updated periodically.

Why Karnataka?

This year, the GO-FAR team’s destination is the South Indian state of Karnataka. Although best known for the booming IT hub of Bengaluru (Bangalore), this state also has a rural hinterland with villages that remain mired in poverty. Rural Karnataka is thus a site of one of the epic dramas of our age: the struggle for subsistence that continues in parallel with the creation of vast wealth in Asia’s economic revolution.

The GO-FAR 2008 team will do stories on this less-reported side of India’s transformation.
